2022 Kia Niro Hybrid – Officially, the second-generation Kia Niro (the second generation) was unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show in November. However, the automaker did not provide details about the three available pure-electric powertrains: the hybrid-electric (HEV), the plug-in hybrid(PHEV), and the pure-electric powertrains. Kia has released a press release today that includes details about the hybrid model and information about safety equipment.
2022 Kia Niro Hybrid Review
According to Kia, the Niro is built on a third-generation platform. This is likely an updated version of the outgoing model’s architecture as the new EGMP is reserved only for EV-only models. The steering and suspension have been optimized by Kia engineers. McPherson struts are at the front and a four-link setup at the back.
The new Kia Niro HEV’s self-charging hybrid powertrain consists of a Smartstream 1.6-litre GDI four-cylinder engine that produces 103 hp (77kW / 105PS) and 144 Nm (106.2 lbft) of torque. There is also a permanent magnet synchronous motor that can produce an additional 43 hp (32/44 PS). The combined output of the two engines is 139 horsepower (104 kW/ 141 PS), which is identical to the previous generation. The front axle is powered by a six-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic.
The new Niro is now 4,420mm (174inches) long, 1,825mm (71.85inches) wide, and 1,545mm (60.82inches) high, with a wheelbase measuring 2,720mm (107inches). This is an increase of 65mm (2.25 inches), 20mm (0.78 inch) in width, 10mm (0.39 inches) in height and 20mm (0.78 inches) in wheelbase. It creates a larger cabin. This model offers a “Green Zone Drive” zero-emission mode that can be activated at specific locations such as schools, hospitals, residential areas, and schools. Although Kia has not mentioned the EV range, we believe it will be quite limited due to the small high-voltage battery under the rear seats and the 12V battery. The battery is a self-charging hybrid, meaning it can only be charged through either regenerative brakes or internal combustion engines. According to Kia the HEV powertrain can achieve 4.81 lt/100 km (48.9 MPG) according to the Korean fuel economy standards. The quirkiness inherent in the HabaNiro-inspired design has been covered, so let’s get on to the technology. Despite having larger dimensions, drag efficiency remains constant at 0.29 cd. The cabin has a larger boot (451 lt (15.9 cubes) that has been increased by 15 lt (0.5 cubes).
A 10.25-inch screen integrates the infotainment and instrument cluster. The cockpit is EV6 inspired. It also features a 10-inch head-up display. A separate section houses the climate control system, C-Type USB sockets, and ambient lighting. The shift lever is for the automatic gearbox. Advanced voice recognition, power tailgate, and digital key are just a few of the technology features. There are also built-in rear and front cameras. Kia DriveWise’s ADAS suite includes all the latest features, including Remote Smart Park Assist and Highway Driving Assist.
