2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV – The 2023 Tonale compact SUV, Alfa Romeo’s first electrified model, is the start of a new era. The Tonale is part of a radical transformation at Alfa Romeo with connectivity and electrification at its core.
2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV Redesign
The Tonale looks very similar to its namesake concept but has been adapted for production. The LED matrix full headlights and taillights are thicker than the concept. Additionally, the rear door handles remain the same as the concept but are now more conventional. In addition, the production model has actual side mirrors.
Because of its iconic styling cues, the Tonale can easily be identified as an Alfa Romeo because of the distinctive “Trilobo”, front end with the “Scudetto” shield in the center, the “GT Line” running from the rear to headlights, and the telephone dial wheels, the Tonale is easy to recognize as an Alfa Romeo. Alfa Romeo’s first plug-in model is based upon an evolution of FCA’s Small Wide (SUSW), a platform that was also used by Jeep Renegade, Compass, and Compass. However, Alfa Romeo noted that the suspension (fully independent MacPherson setup and Frequency Selective Dampinghock absorbers), steering (13.6 to 1 ratio), and electronic architecture were all new. It measures 178.3 inches (4.53 m) in length, 72.4 inches (1.84 m) wide, and 63.0 inches (1.6 meters high), which is similar to a BMW X1.
The Tonale’s interior is very focused on the driver. Highlights include the 12.3-inch “telescopic” instrument panel, compact steering wheels with sporty shapes and aluminum shift paddles, and a 10.25-inch main touch screen. The new DNA mode selector is located on the center console. This allows the driver to choose between Advanced Efficiency (all-electric), Natural, and Dual Power/Dynamic (maximum efficiency).
Engine & Specs
The all-electric mode is available because the Tonale was the first Alfa Romeo with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and standard Q4 AWD. It features a 1.3-liter MultiAir turbocharged 4-cylinder gas engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and a 90kW (121 horsepower) electric motor at the rear. This is an Alfa Romeo exclusive. The system’s total power is 272 HP, but the most important thing is that the all-electric range is 30 miles (48 km). Tonale PHEV’s battery pack is located low in the vehicle. This helps to achieve a 52/48 weight distribution, “unparalleled level” of traction and driving pleasure. The full charge of the battery takes approximately 2.5 hours if you use a Level 2 charger at 240-volts. The good news? The Tonale plug-in hybrid will be available for the US market. There will also be an ICE variant, a 256-hp turbo-four turbo-four that is connected to a standard 9-speed auto as well as a mechanical Q4 AWD system. Europe will also receive two hybrid versions of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with either 128 or 158 horsepower, and a 48-volt electrical motor that is rated at 15kW (20 hp), 55 Nm (40lb-ft) in electric torque.
The Tonale introduces non-fungible token technology (NFT) to Alfa Romeo and the industry. Each vehicle will be linked to a digital NFT certificate, a first for Alfa Romeo and the industry. The NFT will track vehicle data and generate a certificate that can be used for proof of the vehicle’s maintenance history and mileage. The Tonale comes with the Uconnect 5, the most recent version of in-car tech that offers wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, over-the-air capabilities using Alfa Connect, built-in Amazon Alexa and many other features. The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale has Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems, (ADAS). It offers level 2 semi-autonomous driving with traffic jam assist. This works with systems like Adaptive Cruise Control and Traffic Sign Recognition. Intelligent Speed Assist is also available.
