The clever drivetrain will also likely consume a lot less fuel.
2023 Toyota Sequoia i-FORCE Max hybrid Review
Toyota unveiled the 2023 Sequoia, its third-generation full-size SUV on Tuesday night. The launch was dominated by the announcement that all new Sequoias will be powered by a hybrid Toyota engine. Toyota developed its new i-FORCE Max drivetrain to power its next-generation full-size trucks, SUVs, and pickup trucks. This system features a twin-turbocharged V6 and a ten-speed auto transmission. Toyota also included an electric motor/generator in the middle of the gasoline engine and transmission. The motor/generator can be connected to a nickel battery.
The electric motor of the new Sequoia is powerful enough for the SUV to be launched from a halt. The motor can accelerate the whole vehicle up to 18 mph. The V6 starts to fire up as the vehicle speeds up. The electric motor keeps going until the turbochargers kick in. The electric motor/generator helps to slow down the vehicle when you press the brakes. The motor also charges the battery as it slows down the vehicle.
MotorTrend tested the hybrid drivetrain in the 2022 Tundra TRD Pro. According to the publication, the iFORCE MAX’s performance was incredibly smooth. It pulls twice as hard at the low end as a diesel engine. It seamlessly switches to turbocharged gasoline power at the top end.
Engine & Specs
Toyota has a lot of experience in building hybrid vehicles. The automaker focuses on performance and efficiency for the iFORCE MAX. The iFORCE MAX is not equal to the V8’s power, it exceeds it. This drivetrain is responsible to the Tundra’s 12,000-pound towing capacity. The 2023 Sequoia’s maximum tow weight will be 9,000 pounds. However, the SUV will still have plenty of power. The 2023 Sequoia will feature the iFORCE MAX engine, which will produce 437 horsepower and 583 lb.ft of torque. Drivers will have precise control over the power through selectable driving modes. Tow/Haul mode and Sport modes, for example, will use the V6 in conjunction with the electric motor to launch the Sequoia. This combination provides maximum torque at low speeds.
