2023 Toyota Sequoia – The Toyota Sequoia is a great example of how far automotive technology has advanced in the last decade and a quarter. Toyota’s full-size SUV is as old as the giant trees that it was named after. It was last updated for the 2007 model year. The Sequoia was built before the advent of driver-assist technology and infotainment. At the time, a powerful V8 engine was the only way to produce enough power. The times have changed and the Sequoia is finally in line with them. Redesigned Toyota Sequoia 2023 retains traditional SUV attributes such as off-road and robust towing but is modernized to meet current tech standards. It’s also a hybrid.
2023 Toyota Sequoia Redesign
Sequoia’s design is the same as the Toyota Tundra pickup truck. However, this year it’s the updated Tundra version that debuts for the 2022 model years. Toyota claims that the Sequoia retains a truck-derived body-on-frame construction. However, it rides on a stiffer frame than before which improves ride comfort.
The exterior styling reflects the Sequoia Tundra DNA. This could be either a good or bad thing depending on your preference. This SUV is a bold, modern SUV that can be easily confused with a minivan. Toyota tried to make the 2023 Sequoia look sleek and elegant, but it didn’t succeed. The Sequoia is still a three-row SUV. However, it now has a sliding third row. This can be moved forward or backward to increase cargo space or legroom for rear-seat passengers depending on the load. Toyota included an adjustable shelf in the cargo area. The design is reminiscent of the Tundra’s front end, featuring a large touchscreen at the top of the dashboard, and chunky controls that match its rugged exterior.
The new Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment systems are now available for Sequoia. It was first introduced in the 2022 Tundra. Standard features include an 8.0-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot that can support up to five devices. Higher trims include a 14.0-inch touchscreen. The new infotainment system supports Amazon Music, Apple Music, and cloud-based navigation. It also allows for software updates over-the-air.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 bundle includes drive-assist tech including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The 2023 Sequoia comes with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 bundle. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alarm, and rear cross-traffic warning are also standard features. A 360-degree camera system with a rearview mirror and rearview camera mirror will make it easier to park this large SUV. Toyota also added features that are specifically designed for towing. Trailer Backup Guide helps you back up with a trailer. Straight Path Assist provides steering input that will help to keep your SUV and trailer straight when reversed.
The standard equipment for the Sequoia is the i-Force Max hybrid engine. The powertrain includes a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission with an electric motor in the bell housing. Toyota was able to keep the four-wheel-drive system with low range and mechanical four-wheel drive, which is more suitable for off-roading. The Sequoia also comes standard with rear-wheel drive, which is an additional cost. The 2023 Sequoia’s 437 horsepower, 583 pound-feet torque, and 182 lb-ft increases over the 2022 V8-powered model. Toyota has not released the fuel economy figures for Sequoia hybrid but it is likely to be better than its predecessor’s 14 mpg when combined with four-wheel drive. Toyota noted that the electric motor only works at low speeds with the gasoline engine doing the majority of the work above 18. mph.
The Tundra’s adaptive suspension can be fitted with load-leveling rear air suspension. This will ensure a smoother ride. TRD Pro offroad models have their own suspension setup and a locking rear differential. They also get chunkier tires to give them greater off-road capabilities. Toyota claims that the new Sequoia can tow up to 9,000 pounds when properly equipped. This is a significant increase from the previous model’s 7,400-pound maximum weight towing capacity.
2023 Toyota Sequoia Price & Release Date
Toyota has not yet released pricing information, but the 2022 Sequoia can be bought for $50,500 with options and $70,000 without. These prices are for a vehicle that has no development costs, so expect the 2023 Sequoia’s starting price to be a little higher when it hits showrooms in summer.
