2026 Lancia Aurelia SUV – Under new ownership, Lancia, the iconic Italian car brand Lancia, will have its last chance to succeed in this decade. Stellantis’ top-level management has noticed Fiat’s sister company, and is looking to grow it as a premium carmaker on the Old Continent in the industry’s transition towards electric vehicles.
2026 Lancia Aurelia SUV Review
Automotive News Europe last year filed a report stating that three new Lancia models were in development. The model of particular interest is the compact SUV. According to the report, this model will be available in Q1 2026 (January to March 2026), with an all-electric motor as standard. According to Italian media, the electric SUV is called the Lancia Aurelia. However, Lancia CEO Luca Napolitano stated that while the name was not finalized, he referred to it as the Aurelia for convenience. We are also preparing for the future electrification of Lancia. You can see that we start with a large gap in pricing power vis-a-vis our benchmark. This means that if we do everything well, there is a significant opportunity to increase the profitability of Lancia sales. We are planning for an exciting turnaround with some very exciting models. I know this because I have seen them and can confirm that they are beautiful cars. This will also increase the pricing power.
Lancia CEO Luca Napolitano, when asked about the Aurelia in the Quattroruote interview said that he would use “sportback” to describe the upcoming EV. He stated that the company deliberately chose the bodystyle as it is and will continue to be a growing segment in Europe. The brand’s future design should be set by the new Ypsilon which will arrive in 2024 with electrification. Although it is yet to be determined what the model will look like, auto designers and enthusiasts have been imagining different models. Auto designers look back to the Lancia Montecarlo Concept as an example. David Obendorfer’s concept, measuring 4.5 metres long, takes elements from the 1975 Lancia Beta Montecarlo and applies these to a compact plug in hybrid SUV coupe.
The Lancia Aurelia could launch in 2026 with either the STLA Small platform or the STLA Medium platform. However, we believe the latter could give the SUV an advantage. The STLA Small platform is an update to or a successor of the second-gen eCMP, which underpins a host models from the PSA range. It was designed for “efficient city mobility.” The STLA Medium, available starting in 2023, would be a better fit for Lancia’s ambitions. The STLA Medium is for premium vehicles (DS, Alfa Romeo) in both the C and D segments. This possibility is further strengthened by Tavares’ confirmation that Lancia has synergies in place with these premium brands. According to Napolitano’s briefing from Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares, it is very simple. He wants Lancia’s brand to be respected and trusted in the premium market. Lancia would be able to work with DS or Alfa Romeo, sharing technology and software and possibly most of the parts and components. Lancia’s Italian-inspired design will make it stand out, as DS with its French elegance. Stellantis officially approved the development of the new Lancia electric SUV in May 2021. According to reports, the Fiat Melfi (Italy), is being considered as the manufacturing site for this model by Italian metalworker unions.
Lancia hopes that its future buyers will be socially responsible and active citizens who are interested in making positive changes in their communities and taking responsibility for the environment. Napolitano believes that the Lancia Aurelia’s electric drive is not enough. The company should offer sustainable or recyclable solutions. We think this could be extended to the interior of the SUV and possibly even its manufacturing process. According to the CEO, Lancia aims to be the brand that recycles the most materials. Quattroruote was informed by Napolitano that the company is focusing on three parameters for the new Ypsilon. These parameters could change as the Aurelia evolves. The first is a cabin that is inspired by furniture. The second gives you the feeling of being welcomed and cocooned inside. Third, it is a seamless experience to interact with the vehicle.
2026 Lancia Aurelia SUV Expected
Napolitano stated that he expected the brand to attract customers from Audi and Mini as the new Ypsilon goes to market. He also said that he hopes to be able to compete with Volvo users when the Aurelia EVs and Delta EVs go on sale. The CEO stated that the dealership experience and after-sales support would be similar to Mercedes Benz. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares sees Lancia to be a brand that is about “Italian elegance.” He said this in the Q4 2020 earnings call. He stated that Lancia has “a huge potential in Italy” to increase investors’ confidence. Before Stellantis Groupe PSA, DS Automobiles had been Groupe PSA’s premium brand. Lancia was at FCA. DS Automobiles, on the other hand, has a fairly extensive portfolio.
Lancia only sells one model at the moment the Ypsilon. Lancia sold 43,076 units (all Ypsilon) in 2020. DS Automobiles, however, was able sell 43,597 vehicles for 2020. Although Lancia’s presence on the European market is impressive despite its limited availability, it is clear that both brands need to work together to increase their visibility. In 2021, the Ypsilon was third in Italy’s best-selling car after the Fiat Panda (and the Fiat 500). Napolitano stated that he met with European dealers’ associations and briefed them on Lancia’s future strategy. This included its plan to switch to an electric-only brand starting in 2026. He stated that Lancia doesn’t need a large dealer network outside of Italy and that the company will focus its efforts on 60 European cities. Although Lancia dealers may share back offices with Alfa Romeo or DS dealers as well, the showroom experience and sales force will remain separate. Lancia will rely on digital channels to sustain its sales. It is estimated that half of Lancia’s sales would be from outside Italy.
